Where’s the quarterback, where’s the center, the fullback and the rest of the team?
Not here! What? It’s Friday night at Sheboygan North High School and I cannot spot any of the football players.
I guess that means there’s nothing happening under the lights this Friday night–not exactly. The lights would shine, just not outside. The playing field is on stage and the team is the drama team, celebrating their homecoming under the stage lights.
No halftime, just an intermission. There would be no losers either, sort of, just winners.
But why is there no support from the football team, or for that matter any of the athletic teams? You can bet that the kids on stage support them in their endeavors.
Too bad those athletic kids and others comprising the student body missed out on one of the best performances of the school year and possibly one of the best in the 75- year history of the school, which the production celebrated.
This was an original play, entitled “Let’s Build A Campfire There”, with stories written and told by the students. In many cases they were sung.
Filled with humor, sincerity, openness, sadness, hope and even a bit of local flavor, the kids carried themselves well, supported each other in each of the 16 different stories and showed their talent and creativeness.
If there will be any Monday morning quarterbacks out there, I’m sure you would agree, both the offense and defense performed admirably, without fear, to the best of their abilities, with only one objective, pleasing the “fans”.
The only downside was a lack of spectators for the kids, who worked so hard. This should have been a sell out. The only losers this Friday night under the lights were those not attending. Just happy my wife and I were among the winners in the “stands” to bear witness to such heroics.
See you in a few miles….roy
